Doherty’s War & Against the Ropes REBORN!

My friends (and now colleagues) at Wolfpack Publishing have put together a killer cover in a bundle of two of my earliest Noir Novellas. DOHERTY’S WAR is the origin story of our favorite downtrodden detective Charlie Doherty and his experiences in combat in World War I. The story, which was previously published by Down and Out Books as THE DEVIL DOGS OF BELLEAU WOOD, is about Charlie’s participation in that famous, bloody battle that forged the reputation of The United States Marine Corps as one of the most lethal fighting forces in the world.

I’ve had the pleasure of being an attendee and a panelist at several conventions over the years. Here are some things I’ve learned along the way. Hopefully, you’ll find them helpful whether it’s your first convention or your fiftieth.

Western Writers of America Conference – Loveland, Colorado

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend this year’s Western Writers of America (WWA) in Loveland, Colorado. It was my first time in The Centennial State, but it certainly won’t be my last. Loveland is a growing new place about an hour north of Denver, located just south of the better-known Fort Collins area. Along with an abundance of traffic circles at nearly every intersection, new construction of all kinds is everywhere. Malls featuring all of the top stores can be found within only a few miles of any given direction. There are also a wide variety of great restaurants offering every type of cuisine throughout the area. I’d encourage visitors to not only visit the downtown historic district but the outlying areas as well. You won’t be disappointed.

Montana As Myth and Character

After a career spent writing thrillers and crime fiction, many of my colleagues wondered why I wanted to write a western. They were particularly curious about how a life-long New Yorker such as myself would set his story in Montana, a place I had never even seen.
